Medical and Health Care Policies
In response to the American Psychological Association’s (APA), “Proposed Draft Revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and Criteria (“the DSM-5 Proposed Revisions”),” a coalition of legal and advocacy organizations- Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, Lambda Legal, National Center for Lesbian Rights, National Center for Transgender Equality, The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, Transgender Law Center- issued statements urging the APA to prioritize maintaining and increasing access to transition-related healthcare throughout the DSM revision process, and prioritize increasing access to legal and social gender recognition for transgender people. The University of Pennsylvania announced that the university will begin offering insurance coverage in the fall for sex reassignment surgery. Students' insurance at the university, provided by Aetna, will cover up to $50,000 of the cost of surgery and will also cover psychotherapy and hormone treatment."
